This was one of 4 foxes on the scene on this day. Oftentimes, I get how an outside observer may think that I see endless amounts of wildlife when in the field. But, to be honest, I don’t. However, given wildlife photography is my career, I of course see more than the average person would see.. When it comes to social media where many view my images, one must remember it is a highlight reel of sorts. My images wouldn’t be as interesting if I shared scenes without my main subject in it, would it now?

The truth is these moments seen on here & in my social feeds are often fleeting. It is about getting out there and putting in the time, hours, days, weeks and sometimes years. There are days I see nothing, there are days it feels like the whole forest came out to play. I thought I’d pass along a few tips for those who want to potentially see more animals and have successful encounters of their own.

First, know your subject, even a quick google search helps, know what’s in your area & where to look, meadows, water, high in a tree, low in a tree? What time of day that’s best, is the subject you are after more active at a particular time of day? Time & patience are key, the more you have of each, the better your odds of achieving success. How do you conduct yourself in the field? What type of energy are you projecting? Don’t expect to see much if you are walking & gabbing with a friend. Being quiet, moving slowly but with intent and purpose.

Your body language tells animals a lot. Should you cross paths with your subject, don’t use fast movements, don’t be in a rush. I often freeze, even take a slow step back, kneel down, yawn, bow my head or look off in the distance as if I am not too interested. Animals are often curious by nature, if you come off as non-threatening, they often will relax their guard. I think some of the ultimate signs you have earned the trust of an animal are; when in your presence they bed down to sleep, feed their young or turn their back on you.
