Captured from above, I made this photo out the small window opening of a little plane. While working on assignment in Greenland, I had the amazing experience of flying on a private charter out over the Greenland ice cap. Ice that is tens of thousands of years old for as far as the eye can see. Pictured here is where you see the end of the journey for a glacier as it breaks apart and slips into the ocean.  This is the Illulissat Icefjord, named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2004 because of its natural beauty and the importance of the fast-moving Jakobshavn Glacier in developing the current scientific understanding of anthropogenic climate change. This glacier flows at a rate of 20-35 m per day, resulting in around twenty billion tonnes of icebergs calved off and passing out of the fjord every year, such as the one you see pictured here.
